MAI Journal is peer reviewed to international standards by reviewers both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. All papers will be reviewed by at least one indigenous reviewer.

 

If you are interested in submitting an article for consideration, please first read the Author Guidelines and ensure that your paper complies. Then submit your paper using our online submission system. Submissions via email will not be accepted and all submission must comply with the author guidelines and word limits.

Contributors

Contributions are welcomed from all scholars working on indigenous research topics, but must be appropriate to the themes and aims of our journal. MAI Journal focuses on the Aotearoa New Zealand context and welcomes articles from international authors whose work may be of particular relevance to Aotearoa New Zealand. There are two main types of manuscript accepted by MAI Journal:

 

Article

• These make up the main content of the journal.
• This should be a piece of novel work that substantively addresses an indigenous issue or theme in the context of Aotearoa New Zealand.
• Will be peer reviewed to international standards.
• Initial submissions should be limited to 7000 words.
• Articles must include a 100–150 word abstract

Commentary

• Comment or opinion pieces on a topical issue. Containing new insight or opinion.
• Limited to 3000 words.
• Peer assessed by editors/editorial board to ensure appropriateness.
• Limited number published.
• Commentaries must include a 100-150 word abstract.

Situation Reports

A Situation Report is a short piece of up to 2,000 words authored by a research expert(s) that describes a critical issue for an Indigenous people, with minimal scholarly analysis and referencing.. These will only be considered by the Editors if there is no potential for indigenous scholarly research to describe the situation; for example, a language with few speakers that is under threat. These are reviewed by the Editors and Editorial Board, not by peer review.
